Kate Winslet won for the Reader!

Posted on Monday, February 23, 2009 in Current Events, Movies

The Oscars were meh this year. I’m not sure what the whole musical approach was about.. made it feel like it was the Tony’s not so much the Oscars. A few parts were funny though. The opening act was pretty good and Steve Martin and Tina Fey were funny. They’d make great hosts! I don’t think I liked the 5 previous best actor winners presenting the award… I feel like they made it more about the past than about the current movie… I’d rather see a scene from the movie with the best actor nominee in it!

So excited that Kate Winslet won for The Reader. I really liked that movie and I think she did an awesome job. Also really happy with Sean Penn’s win for Best Actor for Milk. I never heard the story of Harvey Milk before, it was really inspiring to watch.

Maybe next year I’ll try to be a seat filler. We’ll see…

Frost/Nixon, The Reader & Slumdog Millionaire

Posted on Monday, February 9, 2009 in Movies

I saw all 3 movies now and I really like all 3. Now that I’ve seen The Reader, I’m rooting for that one. I really liked it. It’s a controversial topic on both moral and political levels, but also very emotionally engaging. Kate Winslet and David Kross (who I’ve never seen in a film before) both have amazing performances. I didn’t question the acting throughout the entire movie.

Frost/Nixon was great too. Frank Langella does an excellent job playing Nixon. The directing was great too. It really brings to light a lot of what politics really are.

Slumdog Millionaire was a great feel good movie. It goes through all the violence, gang-life, poverty and police brutality and then finishes with an expected feel good ending. I felt it was a little predictable but still put together really well. Danny Boyle, the director also did Trainspotting…

Still have to see Milk and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and then I have the Best Picture category covered!

I don’t see what anyone can see in anyone else but … you…

I just bought the Juno soundtrack. I loved the movie and really liked the music throughout. I heard some Kimya Dawson/Moldy Peaches, but didn’t realize there are actually 7 songs from her on the soundtrack! They’re great. I can never get “Anyone Else But You” out of my head. There’s also Sonic Youth, Buddy Holly, Belle & Sebastian and other great stuff on the soundtrack.

Oscars!

Posted on Sunday, February 24, 2008 in Current Events, Movies

Ah, feels so weird after working the Oscars 4 years in a row, now watching it from home! Overall, I felt the show was rather boring. I liked Jon Stewart better on his last Oscars hosting duty. This time he just wasn’t so good… dunno if it was due to the writers strike or what.

So, out of the top categories I only saw “No Country for Old Men” and “Juno”. Still on my list is “There Will be Blood”, “Atonement”, and “Michael Clayton” (yea this year I’m interested in seeing them all). I liked “No Country for Old Men” because it’s excellent film making, acting and directing. But the story line just throws me. I liked it until the end. I’m not sure what I was supposed to get out of it. I got the theme - hunter becomes hunted. The hero is not quite moral but we still root for him… but I’m not sure what else I was supposed to get out of it that made it an excellent film… if someone got more out of it, please tell me what I’m missing!

I loved Juno! I saw it once and already want to see it again and I will because Josh fell asleep during it :) I heard a lot of people loved “There Will be Blood” even those that didn’t like “No Country for Old Men”… so I’m very interested in seeing that next.

Any other suggestions of the nominated films that are must sees??

New Speed Racer Movie!

Posted on Monday, August 27, 2007 in Movies

The Wachowski brothers are working on the new Speed Racer movie and it’s using some kind of new camera that has everthing in focus all the time (just as a cartoon would). I can’t imagine that being a good thing… because focus guides your eye where to look…

Transformers!

Posted on Thursday, July 5, 2007 in Cars, Movies

I didn’t expect to be overly impressed with the Transformers movie, but was surprised how much I liked it. Josh is a huge fan so he knew all the background.. more than anyone should know about a make believe storyline.

Without giving too much away, it was a long movie - 2 hrs 20 mins but it didn’t feel like it at all (nothing like Pirates of the Caribbean 2). The casting was awesome - aside from blonde Aussie girl. Humor is thrown in and somehow works.. better than any other action movie that tries to throw humor in it. Josh says it doesn’t follow the same factual details of the cartoon and cartoon movie, but he still loved it. The renderings are so great and look so real, it’s awesome. After the movie you feel a lot closer to your car :)

LCD Soundsystem! @ El Rey

Posted on Monday, June 11, 2007 in Movies

Saw LCD Soundsystem at El Rey last night with Amritz and Sarah. Soooo good live. Just as good as Coachella but better because I was way closer to the front and had a clear view of James Murphy working his musical genius.

The opening band- Yacht was pretty good. The kid is sooo energetic. He had an ibook, pressed play then went out dancing nonstop and singing, sounded similar to “Of Montreal” kinda stuff:

Jona from Yacht

From what I recall, LCD performed:

Tribulations
Movement (YAY! one of my favorites)
Thrills
Great Release
Yeah (a reeeeeally long cool version)
Watch the Tapes
Us V Them
Time to Get Away
North American Scum
All of My Friends
Get Innocuous!
New York, I love you but you’re bringing me down…

They did a 3 song encore and Murphy said that’s 2 songs more than the night before. :) It was a special night.

Reno

Saw Reno 911: Miami with Josh this past weekend it ws fantastic! If you like the show, it’s just as absurd. I loved it. It seems very ad lib. I wonder if it is…

I rode 6 miles on my bike today, the bike path by my house has been repaired.. it goes on much further than I rode but I turned around when I couldn’t ride anymore and had to ride all the way back home. ugh. Wednesday I’ll do it again if it’s warm again. All the Amgen bike riders were totally riding the path.. lookin all professional rider like in their spandex. No, I won’t wear bicyclist spandex.
