Old cell phone worth 10% what you paid for it?

Posted on Thursday, September 18, 2008 in Technology

Donate it! It’s tax deductible and in most cases the shipping is free… Fewer than 1 in 10 cell phones in recycled. The cell phone and its components represent energy that has been used to create that phone. Anything that can be done to prolong that phone’s useful life reduces or postpones the need to use energy to create a new cell phone. And the less energy used, the less carbon is released into Earth’s atmosphere. With world wide cell phone sales projected to top 1 billion per year in 2009, any effort to reduce those numbers could yield large energy and environmental savings.

Cell Phones for Soldiers

Cell phone donation for several organizations

Cell phone for 911 emergency phones

Or just recycle it at a location near you

I learned most of this from carbonrally.com :)

Save trees! Get rid of the phone book!

Posted on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 in Current Events

Most people don’t use the phone book anymore… with internet resources like maps.google.com and yp.yahoo.com there really is no need. The phone book can’t keep up with business updates as fast as the internet can. So why not save a tree! Opt out of receiving the phone book:

hi-tech green style…

Posted on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 in Uncategorized

Since the hands-free phone law goes into effect July 1 in LA where you can no longer hold a cell phone and talk to it in your car… I needed to pick up a bluetooth headset. I really don’t talk much on my cell phone at all to begin with much less in my car, but it’s a good thing to have just in case and maybe it prevents that cell phone brain cancer everyone’s talking about.

So this is what I picked:

Iqua SUN solar powered bluetooth headset

It’s not as stylish as the other bluetooth headsets out there, but it has something perfect for me in sunny California. A solar panel for charging! It’s the Iqua 603 SUN Bluetooth Wireless Headset. I’ve charged it once in the wall charger since I bought it and it’s been solar charging since. I just sit it in my car in the sun and it charges. Quite the opposite of most electronics that you should keep out of direct sunlight….

Posted on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 in Current Events

Today (and yesterday) to celebrate Earth Day, several supermarkets are giving away a free reusable bag to each customer while supplies last. The bags are made out of recycled material. Just realized it’s state law that super markets offer plastic bag recycling and they must sell reusable bags. New Years Resolution Update…

Posted on Sunday, April 13, 2008 in Uncategorized

So my New Year’s resolution was to try to be more green. I think I’m doing pretty good. We’ve been recycling EVERYTHING. Even the gross food containers of spoiled food, I plug my nose and clean them out for recycling. We recycle junk mail and the newspaper ads we get.

I looked into replacing our bulbs in the house with energy-efficient bulbs. I found big lots of them on eBay which is probably the way we’ll go… but maybe next month because we have a lot of wedding gifts to buy!

Baggu BagI did pick up some sweet reusable bags from baggubag.com. Josh is embarassed to be seen with me because everytime we’re at a checkout at like Target or Albertsons and even Macy’s this weekend I pulled out a bag from my purse and said “Don’t worry about it, I have my own bag.” Btw, they don’t make it easy to use your own bags at the self checkout counters… “unexpected item in bagging area, please wait for assistance”… ugh. And they’re afraid to touch your bags at the grocery stores and department stores they just hand you all the stuff to bag it yourself

I also use a lot less paper towels now and I’ve been cleaning windows in the house with a squegee and water instead of paper towels and windex. I am feeling very good about my newly green ways :) It reduces all the plastic bag clutter we usually have under our sink and we have way less garbage on garbage day too!

Another tip… you can recycle all those plastic bags at local Ralph’s stores or Smart & Final stores! That’s where I took a whole bunch of our bags.

I found a few places that sell solar powered Christmas lights, wreaths and garland. How cool is that?! A green christmas :)
